The purpose of this study is to describe and understand the experiences of nursing professionals during the care of adults with rare diseases hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit of a private clinic in Comodoro Rivadavia, Chubut. Rare diseases, characterized by their low prevalence and high complexity of diagnosis and treatment, represent a critical challenge for the healthcare system and, specifically, for nursing staff, who contribute to the pillar of continuous care. The objective is to understand the challenges faced by nursing staff, identifying key aspects of care to contribute to the future development of specific protocols. A qualitative, phenomenological, cross-sectional design was adopted, allowing for the capture of the subjective meanings that nurses attribute to their practice. The study population consisted of the ICU nursing staff, selected through purposive quota sampling. Data collection was carried out through an open-ended interview consisting of 17 questions, in which 7 nursing professionals participated. These interviews were structured around four key areas: clinical practice, professional training, emotional impact, and interaction with the family environment. Preliminary findings revealed that a lack of specific training and diagnostic uncertainty generate a significant emotional burden for nursing staff. The need to strengthen the scientific foundation of the profession is highlighted through greater dissemination of information about the disease, ongoing training, and the implementation of clinical practice guidelines that not only for nursing professionals but also allow for the integration of family members as active participants in care. This research aims to raise awareness of the role of nursing in the context of acute family illnesses, promoting humanized and safe care in critical care settings.
